What is Parents as First Teachers?

Babies are born to learn, but they don’t come with a set of instructions, and sometimes parenting can seem like a thankless task. At Chestnut Lane Infant School, we run a community based parenting support programme – Parents as First Teachers (PAFT).

This voluntary programme is free to all parents and carers of babies and pre-school children (0-5 years), and is designed to enhance child development and school achievement. Your involvement can begin as soon as you know you are pregnant.

Parents as First Teachers UK has been operating in Buckinghamshire since 1991, when the first project was established at Kings Wood School, High Wycombe. The programme is based on the fundamental truths that parents are the first and most influential teachers of their children, and that the early years lay the foundations for a child’s success in school.
