How does Parents as First Teachers work?

Based on current research into neuroscience and child development, Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) has three key elements. Crucially, it is the parent, not the project worker, who works with their own child to achieve the full benefits of the programme:

• Group Meetings provide opportunities for parents to meet other local parents, to share experiences and to have occasional informal contact with paediatric specialists with whom they might not otherwise. 

• Regular Personal Visits by a trained project worker who discusses your child's development and introduces activities which will enhance and nurture their language, problem solving, social and physical skills. During one-to-one sessions, the project worker will help you know what to expect and build on at each stage of your child's development, and to detect and seek early intervention if any problems arise. 
• Resource Network to put families in touch with other support agencies or community services.
