What is Eco Schools?

The Government in England wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

There are 46 countries around the world that run the Eco-Schools programme, linking more than 40,000 schools - from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa. The Eco-Schools programme is administered in England by Keep Britain Tidy.

Schools follow a simple seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.

Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools - they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success.

Schools work towards gaining one of three awards -Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Chestnut Lane School achieved the Green Flag Award in July 2008. We were the first infant school in Buckinghamshire to do so! More information about Eco Schools can be found at eco-schools.org.uk

Eco Schools and Sustainability at Chestnut Lane - A Green Flag Award School

At Chestnut Lane School, sustainability is at the heart of all we do. We are fortunate enough to have very enthusiastic children, parents, staff and governors working on our committee and supporting the eco schools programme. If you are interested in joining us or feel you can offer support in any way, please email the school at office@chestnutlane.bucks.sch.uk

In July 2008 Chestnut Lane was awarded its first green flag having sucessfully gained the Bronze & Silver awards previously. In June 2010 we were reassessed and awarded a second green flag. We are very proud of our award and grateful to pupils, staff, parents and governors for all their hard work.

To get a feel for what we are about have a look at our Eco Code written by the Year 2 children (communication committee) using ideas gathered at a whole school assembly.

Our newsletters are produced termly. This term the children have produced the eco newsletter. In order to save paper and avoid litter, we have decide not to send paper copies home. Please have a look at all our newsletters to find out some of the exciting things we have been doing.
