At Chestnut Lane we try to recycle as much of the waste we generate as possible and also provide opportunities for our school community to bring in waste from home. As well as reducing all our landfill contributions, it shows the children that lots of the things we usually throw away can be turned into new products and sometimes generates money for various charities.
At school we recycle our paper, plastic bottles, cans, printer cartridges and all our green waste is composted.

Paper chains made from recycled magazines
MOBILE PHONES -We send these to be recycled and the proceeds are sent to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.(http://www.shelter.org.uk)
FOIL - Clean foil can be recycled in a bin by Purple Class. This is collected by Aylesbury reuse and recycling centre (http://www.arrc.me.uk/) which provides a recycling and re-use facility and provides sheltered work opportunities for adult volunteers with learning disabilities. Recycling the foil saves new aluminium being mined and reduces the chemicals and energy needed to produce new foil.
PRINTER CARTRIDGES - These can be collected for recycling outside the office in the main building. The school receives financial rewards for recycling ink cartridges.
STAMPS - These can be collected for recycling outside the office in the main building and we send these to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. (http://www.hearingdogs.org.uk/)
BATTERIES - These can be collected for recycling outside the office in the main building. These are taken to the specialist bin at the tip. The batteries are then processed and precious and dangerous chemicals removed.
PLASTIC BOTTLE TOPS - These are collected and counted in the class rooms and sent to Purple Class. They are then given to the Air Ambulance in Hertfordshire who use the money they receive from recycling them to help run their service.
SPECTACLES – These are collected for recycling outside the office in the main building when they are sent to Vision Aid. (http://www.vao.org.uk/)
CHRISTMAS CARDS - These are collected for recycling in January in the entrance area. They are then saved until December when the environment club sort and trim for resale as postcards. The children then chose which charity to send the proceeds to.

We are looking for new ideas for recycling initiatives. Please email the school office if you have any ideas. office@chestnutlane.bucks.sch.uk
