Resilience and Self-Esteem

Resilience

Resilience is a BIG DEAL! A core life skill. Resilience is having the power to recover and bounce back, it is failing and trying again. Having resilience is like having a super power, but it is something that develops over time and through experiences, and when supported with a safety net.

What does being Resilient look like?

  1. Being upset but not being stuck in the feeling.
  2. Can calm down with help from others, then gradually by themselves through knowing what works for them as an individual (e.g. quiet time).
  3. Crying but then also being able to recover.
  4. Trying again after something goes wrong.
  5. Accepting help without feeling shame.
  6. Using language “can I try again?” instead of “I can’t”.
  7. In learning, they persist with a tricky task.
  8. They can make mistakes and accept them.
  9. Asking for reassurance when necessary.

Self Esteem

Self Esteem is having confidence in ourselves. Knowing that we are important and valued. Accepting ourselves and trusting in our own ability. In short knowing that “I am okay as I am”.

What does self esteem look like in a person?

  1. Confident or willing in trying something new.
  2. Not giving up immediately.
  3. Positive self-talk
  4. Independence: trying themselves before asking for help.
  5. Taking risks in conversation with others, sharing own opinion.
  6. Showing empathy and handling conflict without losing confidence.
  7. Resilience: bouncing back and knowing they can try again.
  8. Pride in self and achievements.
  9. Healthy risks, being curious and trying new things outside own comfort zone.
